New Jersey Licensing for Dental Assistants

What is the 411 for Dental Assistants in New Jersey?

To become a licensed dental radiologic technologist in New Jersey, a dental assistant should contact the Department of Environmental Protection, the Bureau of Radiological Health in New Jersey.

Here is their website:

For the RDA, you can contact the NJ Board of Dentistry for acceptable documentation to transfer from state to state.  Here is the link to the Board of Dentistry:

The RDA, expanded functions, is issued through the NJ Board of Dentistry.

I am a Certified Dental Assistant. Is that a license?

No. The credential CDA is issued by the Dental Assisting National Board after taking a series of exams. It is required to apply for an RDA and is sometimes required for employment. It does not serve as a license and does not allow the assistant to perform additional functions.

Dental Radiography

New Jersey Dental Assistants must possess a license as a “Dental x-ray technologist” means a person, other than a licensed practitioner, whose practice of radiologic technology is limited to intraoral radiography for diagnostic purposes only. Licensure is regulated by the Department of Environmental Protection, pursuant to N.J.S.A. 26:2D-24 et seq. Information on obtaining a dental x-ray license can be found on the Bureau’s website.
