The Dental Assistant National Board (DANB) offered the first time ever, “Item Writing Workshop” in San Francisco, California, September 25, 2007 at the ADAA Annual Conference. Dr. Carolyn Breen, and Kim McMahon were two of the 50 participants of whom represented dental assisting educators and clinical dental assistants. The workshop was designed to teach oral healthcare professionals, who are currently certified by DANB, how to write effective multiple-choice items and create new items for assigned areas of DANB exams. Additionally, participants learned how the DANB Exam Committees work and how to become part of the process of measuring dental assisting competency. They each received 8 clinical continuing education credit hours, an honorarium, glossary of “Dental Assisting Terms” and “DANB’s Item Writing Guide”, and a certificate of workshop participation.
